So… There is one confuse. Than R2 receive this default route from R1, It can see that this route point to R2. Why R2 add this route in its routing table as default route with next hop – R1. Just because this route was propagated by R1?

OK assume we have configured the exit interface wrong and there is a packet came to R2 and destined for 192.168.1.1 can you please tell me how exactly R2 will forward that packet to R1 back. Default route is configured to R1 so thats cool you can say any packets is not in the routing table will be forwarded to R2 but how on earth R2 will forward that packet to R1 back without any other extra configuration.

this is what happens. packet 192.168.1.1 enters to R2 interface and R2 will check its routing table and can’t find any match then R2 will check if a default route is being configured (gateway of last resort) and won’t be able to find any match either and that is it. BYE BYE that packet will be dropped straight away.

The loop occurs because the default information originate command is propagating the default route to R2, but because the exit interface was incorrectly configured with s0/0/0 rather than with s0/0/1 going to the ISP, the default route is just pointing back to R2 which then forwards the packet back to R1 and causing the loop.

No you are wrong. The exit interface is s0/0 therefore the default route configuration is correct. Any packet is destined to R1 and if the network is not in the routing table will be forward to s0/0 exit interface and will reach to R2. There is no indication about any default route being configured for R2 router so if the packets destination address is not in the r2′s route table, that packet will be dropped. I don’t know how everyone talks about routing loops here. How is a packet destined for unknown network coming to R2 is going back to R1 without their network address being in R2′s routing table.

Well, question 6 is kind of confusing and tricky because s0/1 is what is meant to have being used on R1 for the default route creation since it is the exit interface. s0/0 used however is the interface that leads back to R2, hence answer E. good one

Areas may be assigned any number from 0 to 4294967295.
Anyways i think the answer B is correct because the range 0 to 65535 is inside whole range.

There are no assumptions as R1 is configured with “default-information originate” meaning it will advertise its configured default route to other routers. Since it’s default route is the interface that connects R2 any unknown traffic will create a routing loop.

The answer above is valid only if you assume R2 has a default route pointing to R1. That is kind of hinted at in the explanation: “…R2 in turn sends it to R1 because it is the only way…”.

But, of course, any time you have two routers pointing default routes at each other, a big alarm bell should go off in your head.

The routers are running OSPF and they are in area 0. Why split horizon will even come into play as that is for RIP.
default-information originate will advertise the default route configured on R1 to R2 through the OSPF.
Also, the rule of thumb for a default route is that this should be configured on stub.

Hi All!

Could anyone please explain why Router 2 in Q.6 doesn’t drop the packet but sends it back to R1. According to me, R2 should drop the packet for which it doesn’t have destination packet in its routing table. Explanation says otherwise. Also, split horizon prevents routing loops , so why loop occur at all.

To BobSmith: I believe since the default route from R1 is being propogated to R2 via OSPF default information originate, any route that R2 doesn’t have in the table will shoot over to R1, which will then cause a loop since the default route for R1 is already incorrect. Someone let me know if I’m wrong.

should be Aand D correct not C as we can see all three router are in the same are 0 , A is correct because routers with a lower administrative distance will force these routers to run EIGRP, not OSPF so that way the administrator can not a establish OSPF .
