Directly connected routers don’t require a route to each other, because the ip address and mask gives them enough information about the link. Switchs foward information based on their mac table, and has no idea how to differentiate a host from a router unless the router is configured as the default gateway.

Host B is able to ping Host A only becasue they both have a defaut gateway set. This is because they are in different vlans (This is an example of Router on a Stick). Host A not B would be able to connect to the router without the default gateway because the switch has in ip address in the same vlan(1). Because Host B is in a different Vlan, it must use the default gateway to send packets to the switches vlan interface. When the switch recieves the message(which it does), it doesn’t know where to send it back without a default gateway. Being able to Telnet/SSH and ping a switch are the two number one reasons a default gateway needs to be configured.

Correct me if im wrong. Thank You

This is a dangerous question….
Host B can ping Host A and Host C = router – switch link is up/up, routing is working
If Host B can ping Host A, the it can also ping the switch on VLAN 1 interface as Host A is on VLAN 1.
The default gateway for the switch is irrelevant because it is directly connected to the router.
The only reason why Host B would not be able to access the switch via telnet is a access-class on the vty lines filtering telnet from Host B network.

None of the provided answers are correct.

Please revise question.

It is not important what is default gateway on switch.I tried all gateways and it works.
I made this topology in packet tracer. You can put 172.19.1.254,or 172.19.32.254,or 172.19.33.254 it works anyway

when PC B want to telnet the int vlan 1 (which is the switch int ) the packet will follow

from PC B—> to the router sub interface 172.19.32.254 —> to int vlan 1172.19.1.250
the problem in the return path because
the int vlan 1 dos not know the ip or the sub-net of PC B(different vlan) so ,

default gateway which is 172.19.32.254 should be configured in the swich config mode

It doesn’t make sense Host B doesn’t have default gateway configure if it successfully ping other hosts. If they referring that hosts on the same subnet with Host B, well, it’s good (the exhibit shows no other hosts). But if it is on the other subnet (base on the exhibit), there’s something wrong with the question.

when telnetting to swith, the souce decice ie, B will create a packet like

DATA |source ip |destination IP|source mac| destination mac|

source ip will be 172.19.32.2
destination ip will be 172.19.1.250
source mac will be device B mac
destination mac will default gateway mac(since destination ip belongs to different subnet )
this default gateway is already assigned in B.
when this packet reaches to router, router will route the packet to 172.19.1.250 the switch.

so what is the point of assigning appropriate default gateway on switch ??

I took for the 2nd time in 90 days and saw maybe 5 questions from the 1st test I took, but 35 different questions from 9tuts pool of questions. SIM had a different look at same testing site… they were worse. Had trouble with show mac-address had to use sh mac then hit tab to get the correct command. While scrolling in a show run my commands would disappear and cause issues seeing what i typed. But passed so that is all that matters

If you think host b can reach host a because host B has a default gateway.

Switch only have layer 3 conectivity for vlan 1 because it is its own network. The switch does not how to reach the vlan 32. The switch needs to point the router to reach that network because the router can send traffic accross every single vlan.

The switch is not a layer 3 device ¨It needs to forward the traffic to the router¨

I hope that helps.

In the picture there is not ¨show ip route¨

So We can not say that the switch does not have a default gateway but it would be the only answer.

this is basic routing. But needs to be anylized very well. That is why only practicing we can understand that.

1. The default gateways are on the router
2. The switch has an ip address in vlan1…Int vlan 1….but does not have a default gateway command configured pointing to the ip address on router 172.19.1.254
3. Therefore client A can talk to the switch because they are on the same subnet and you do not need a default gateway configured to communicate on same subnet, Clients B and C can not Telnet to the switch.

4. Ans B is correct.

“But host B (172.19.32.2) and the management IP address of the Switch (172.19.1.250) are not in the same subnet so host B needs a default gateway to telnet to the switch. The default gateway on host B should be 172.19.32.254.”

Because Host B already able to reach Host A and C, this could means default gateway is configured correctly in Host B.

Let me know your thoughts.

It says :
B. The switch needs an appropriate default gateway assigned.

Other hosts is reachable from B, except the switch. I consider the switch acts as a host. Therefore this could means other hosts default gateway is configured correctly except the switch.

I think qwestion 5 is not so corectly. If HOst B can ping to host A and C, it means that host B has default gatewey, so B can telnet to switch (179.19.1.250).
Answer B is the best answer, but this qwestion is bad write qwestion.
Wy?

No problem because host B can ping other two hosts that belongs to deifferent VLANs.

if there is no connectivity probs from host B to Router for inter-vlan communication, so what is preventing host B to accessing vlan-1′s management interface(ip of vlan 1). want a real answer!
