DHCP

Refer to the exhibit. Using the information shown, answer the question

Question 1:

All hosts in the networks have been operational for several hours when the DHCP server goes down. What happens to the hosts that have obtained service from the DHCP server?

A – The hosts will not be able to communicate with any other hosts.
B – The hosts will continue to communicate normally for a period of time.
C – The hosts will be able to communicate with hosts outsides their own network
D – The hosts will only be able to communicate with other hosts by IP address not by hostname

Answer: B

Explanation:

DHCP often uses dynamic allocation mechanism to save IP addresses, which assigns an IP address to a client for a limited period of time. So when the DHCP server goes down, that client can still use the allocated IP address for a period of time

Question 2:

What is the purpose of the DHCP server?

A – to provide storage for email
B – to translate URLs to IP addresses
C – to translate IPv4 addresses to MAC addresses
D – to provide an IP configuration information to hosts

Answer: D

Explanation:

The main purpose of the DHCP server is to provide IP configuration parameters to hosts such as the default gateway, domain name, Domain Name System (DNS) server…

Question 3:

How is the message sent from a PC2 when is first powers on and attempts to contact the DHCP Server?

A – Layer 3 unicast
B – Layer 3 broadcast
C – Layer 3 multicast
D – Without any Layer 3 encapsulation

Answer: B

Explanation:

When a client boots up for the first time, it transmits a DHCPDISCOVER message on its local physical subnet. Because the client has no way of knowing the subnet to which it belongs, the DHCPDISCOVER is an all-subnets broadcast (destination IP address of 255.255.255.255, which is a layer 3 broadcast address). The client does not have a configured IP address, so the source IP address of 0.0.0.0 is used.

Question 4:

What is the default behavior of R1 when PC1 requests service from DHCP server?

A – Drop the request
B – Broadcast the request to R2 and R3
C – Forward the request to R2
D – Broadcast the request to R2, R3 and ISP

Answer: A

Explanation:

When PC1 requests service from DHCP server (for example, it requests an IP address), it sends a broadcast packet. But R1 router, by default, will not forward broadcast packet and drop it.

For your information, if you want to use the DHCP server from another network (like in this case) you can use the ip helper-address command which will make the router forward UDP broadcasts.

In the real exam you will be taken to a LAB simulation environment but it is, in fact, just a group of 4 multi-choice questions!

    @ Mihai Alex

You are right, but its not the initial Source address. Before the sending the DHCP discover message source IP address will be 0.0.0.0. After Client discovers the DHCP server, the server offers the IP address from the pool randomly..

hi guys i hv foll doubts will someone plz help me…………???….tnx in advance……….

    1. Will ip configuration assigned by DHCP be saved when we shut down our PC or wl it be lost?

    2. How a ip conflict can occur as all IPs are assigned by DHCP….. then how 2 PCs can share same IPs?

3.How to identify the conflicts?…… i knw da cmd….bt to look for in it?

    4. AS mentioned in Q4, if R1 drops da request packet , then how PC1′s req will reach the DHCP server?

plz help me asap………..i m goin to take the exam in few days………
    tnx

    @AnkushK

1st answer —I think, It depends on the DHCP configuration and happens in rare case….For example if the IP address is assigned 24hrs leased and u shut down the PC for 1hour and the same IP will be assigned after u turn on the PC and also u can bind IP address for particular MAC address…

    2. answer —- It happens if some one had assigned the Pool IP manually.

    3. answer —- You can find the POP up in Windows… and actual means is to check in the Router by command itself… Instead of moving to PC, do it from Router itself.

    4. I think, they way u understand the question is wrong. The PC will not reach DHCP server, The request will be dropped near Router itself as Router will not Broadcast the packet outside LAN.

If i am wrong tell me … So that i can correct ….

    @Nanda Kumar N

    tnx very much……….

for q4 …….but then ultimately i want to knw how the PC1 req will reach dhcp server as all routers will drop the broadcast?

and in 2nd answer i m not satisfied by the explanation……..what it has to do with whether someone had manually assigned the Pool IP or it has been assigned automatically…………..????

plz help me on this…………i knw i ask too many doubts………..bt tnx for ur efforts…….

    @ Ankushk

    For q4 Answer

DHCP clients use bootp packets that are broadcasted to all hosts(255.255.255.255) and it will be all dropped by the router. “ip helper-address” command makes the router to forward BOOTP broadcast packets to the specific remote DHCP server (If not found in LOCAL LAN).

    For 2nd answer.

Sorry, i just said 1 idea to check, but the actual answer is, once DHCP client sends an DHCP request, the servers checks for any conflict using PING before assigning IP from POOL. Client uses gratuitous ARP to avoid possible duplication . HOST will broadcast for its own Ip address

I think you got complete answer……

I think i would like to recommend is just read Todd lammle book, best for passing CCNA exam. But understanding the concept will make perfect.

Helllllloooooo guys. I passed my exam last Wednesday with a hit of 907. I was really happy. The questions were all the same from the dumps(SHEKAR). Only a very very few were new. Nonetheless the new qns had the same concept rounding off. The sims were the usual EIGRP, ACL & VTP. Only in ACL there was just alittle play around, this time it was host B. The EIGRP a new router was added. And well there is something to note on the VTP sim. The show mac-address-table is a bug to the sim. Therefore, you can either use show mac or rather show mac address-table.

My thanks to the 9tut online community, to my colleagues Denis & Rogers, my teachers, and to God almighty. I wish you all the best guys. I’m going for the CCNA security soon and am planning to take my exam this coming October. And I hope to eat Christmas with my CCNP. cheers and all the best!

9tut, as per Q3, I thought that a router by default did not send broadcast traffic hence the answer for Q3 stating just that. Could you break that down further please? Thx

  21. 9tut
    November 28th, 2012

@Jamerican: Question 3 asks about the client, not the router. The client does send a Layer 3 Broadcast DHCPDISCOVER message at the beginning. That is the only way to know about its subnet.

    February 3rd, 2013

Can somebody please explain to me the concept of a DHCP client system using an DHCP server which is in a different network?
    1. How would such a DHCP server offer addresses to systems which are in different networks? In the exibit, suppose that PC1 and PC2 both request IP addresses to the DHCP server, how would this work out?
    2. Even though one can configure several address pools on a single DCHP server, how would the server make the determination as to in which networks PC1 and PC2 are?
    I’m kind of confused.

  27. Bob
    February 11th, 2013

@Misiela When the Router forwards the original DHCP request, the traffic reaching the details of the router interface which ‘heard’ the DHCP request is also included in the request data. From the information, the DHCP Server matches up the same scope subnet, and replies with an offer from that scope.

  28. Bob
    February 11th, 2013

@Misiela Try again (!) When the Router forwards the original DHCP request, the details of the router interface which ‘heard’ the DHCP request is also included in the request data. From that information, the DHCP Server matches up the same scope subnet, and replies with an offer from that scope. The router then passes this response back to the client/host.

    March 15th, 2013

hi, please explain the last question. R1 will dropped the packet because there is a DHCP Server?

  34. Lee
    March 15th, 2013

No,the packet will be dropped because the “default behaviour” of routers is to not forward broadcasts. The DHCP request is a broadcast.

If you enable ip helper-address then the broadcast would be forwarded

Hi, this coment has nonhitg to do with this article I’m afraid but I couldn’t find any other way to try and contact you. Anyhow..I was looking at your page:and thought the code might be useful to me. Unfortunately it produced bundles of parse errors which I tracked down to being because of the html codes you’ve used to display both single and double quotation marks. Once they were all replaced with simple or everything worked fine but there were quite a lot of replacements required! If you’d like a fixed up version of the code I’d be happy to send it to you.
