Question 1

Which PPP subprotocol negotiates authentication options?

A. NCP
B. ISDN
C. SUP
D. LCP
E. DLCI

Answer: D

Question 2

A network administrator needs to configure a serial link between the main office and a remote location. The router at the remote office is a non-Cisco router. How should the network administrator configure the serial interface of the main office router to make the connection?

A. Main(config)# interface serial 0/0
Main(config-if)# ip address 172.16.1.1 255.255.255.252
Main(config-if)# no shut

B. Main(config)# interface serial 0/0
Main(config-if)# ip address 172.16.1.1 255.255.255.252
Main(config-if)# encapsulation ppp
Main(config-if)# no shut

C. Main(config)# interface serial 0/0
Main(config-if)# ip address 172.16.1.1 255.255.255.252
Main(config-if)# encapsulation frame-relay
Main(config-if)# authentication chap
Main(config-if)# no shut

D. Main(config)# interface serial 0/0
Main(config-if)#ip address 172.16.1.1 255.255.255.252
Main(config-if)#encapsulation ietf
Main(config-if)# no shut

Answer: B

Question 3

Which two options are valid WAN connectivity methods? (Choose two)

A. PPP
B. WAP
C. DSL
D. L2TPv3
E. Ethernet

Answer: A C

Question 4

Which Layer 2 protocol encapsulation type supports synchronous and asynchronous circuits and has built-in security mechanisms?
A. HDLC
B. PPP
C. X.25
D. Frame Relay

Answer: B

Explanation

PPP supports both synchronous (like analog phone lines) and asynchronous circuits (such as ISDN or digital links). With synchronous circuits we need to use clock rate.

Note: Serial links can be synchronous or asynchronous. Asynchronous connections used to be only available on low-speed (<2MB) serial interfaces, but now, there are the new HWICs (High-Speed WAN Interface Cards) which also support asynchronous mode. To learn more about them please visit http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps5949/ps6182/prod_qas0900aecd80274424.html.

Question 5

Which command is used to enable CHAP authentication with PAP as the fallback method on a serial interface?

A. (config-if)# authentication ppp chap fallback ppp
B. (config-if)# authentication ppp chap pap
C. (config-if)# ppp authentication chap pap
D. (config-if)# ppp authentication chap fallback ppp

Answer: C

Explanation

The command “ppp authentication chap pap” command indicates the CHAP authentication is used first. If it fails or is rejected by other side then uses PAP instead. If you want to use PAP first (then CHAP) you can use the “ppp authentication pap chap” command.

Question 6

Which of the following describes the roles of devices in a WAN? (Choose three.)

A. A CSU/DSU terminates a digital local loop
B. A modem terminates a digital local loop
C. A CSU/DSU terminates an analog local loop
D. A modem terminates an analog local loop
E. A router is commonly considered a DTE device
F. A router is commonly considered a DCE device

Answer: A D E

Explanation

The idea behind a WAN is to be able to connect two DTE networks together through a DCE network. The network’s DCE device (includes CSU/DSU) provides clocking to the DTE-connected interface (the router’s serial interface).

Question 7

Which two statements about using the CHAP authentication mechanism in a PPP link are true? (Choose two)

A. CHAP uses a two-way handshake.
B. CHAP uses a three-way handshake.
C. CHAP authentication periodically occurs after link establishment.
D. CHAP authentication passwords are sent in plaintext.
E. CHAP authentication is performed only upon link establishment.
F. CHAP has no protection from playback attacks.

Answer: B C

When u r configuring a WAN data link encapsulation on a non-cisco router ,,, u either use PPP or frame-relay ietf ,,,, HDLC – high-level data link control is a vendor proprietary protocol which can only be use by routers frm d manufacturer example cisco has is own HDLC protocol ,,, so to the questn” PPP (point to point)” and “frame-relay ietf” are standard dat can b use wit different vendors (example, cisco and non-cisco router) … So which makes only B d correct option .

Do note that D can’t be a right answer. the logic is correct, but if you go to a serial interface and type in encapsulation and ? you dont get an ietf option…you get a frame relay option but not an ietf. Therefor, B can be the only correct answer

  9. ebemusty
    January 22nd, 2014

D is only correct provided they write d statement in full ……. Main(config-if)#encapsulation frame-relay ietf ……. Bt frame-relay is nt included b4 ietf , which makes B d only correct option …

    Question 1
    Answer: D
    Explanation:
PPP defines the Link Control Protocol (LCP). The job of the LCP is to establish, configure, and test the data-link connection. When hosts negotiate a PPP connection, they exchange LCP packets. These packets allow link partners to dynamically negotiate link options, including authentication, compression, and MLP. The protocol field is used to
identify various Layer 3 protocols, such as IP or IPX. The LCP field allows for the following features:
    1. Authentication
    2. Callback
    3. Compression
    4. Multilink PPP
Once the LCP establishes the Layer 2 connection, the Network Control Protocol (NCP) takes over. Link partners exchange NCP packets to establish and configure different network-layer protocols including IP, IPX, and AppleTalk. Each Layer 3 protocol has its own NCP. For example, IP’s NCP is IPCP. IPX’s NCP is IPXCP and Appletalk’s NCP is
    ATALKCP.

    Question 2:
Option B is not the best answer: encapsulation ppp
Option D is the best answer: encapsulation ietf

ietf encapsulation should be used with using cross vendor frame-relay

    Please see the description below:

“Another important setting to consider when looking at Frame Relay networks is the initial encapsulation type used when the protocol is activated on an interface. This setting must be consistent between end devices on the internetwork. If you are connecting Cisco-only devices, Cisco encapsulation may be used. This is the default encapsulation type on Cisco routers. If you are connecting to hardware from other vendors, IETF encapsulation should be used.”

    Question 1:
Option D is the best answer: LCP
Option E is not the best snwer: DLCI

    LCP provides authentication
DLCI = 10 bit wide link-local virtual circuit identifier used to assign frames to a specific PVC or SVC

    Dear Wall Cookie,
I am actually confused regarding your answer.I think Answer B is right not D.

If you have gone through cisco materials then you can see below lines are clearly written there
    ——————————————-
    Configuring HDLC Encapsulation
Cisco HDLC is the default encapsulation method used by Cisco devices on synchronous serial lines.

You use Cisco HDLC as a point-to-point protocol on leased lines between two Cisco devices. If you are connecting to a non-Cisco device, __________use synchronous PPP_____.

im still confuse how they got the answer for question 7?

  33. Parth
    April 1st, 2014

Hey Veronica , Explanation for Que 7

CHAP is an authentication scheme used by Point to Point Protocol (PPP) servers to validate the
identity of remote clients. CHAP periodically verifies the identity of the client by using a three-way
handshake. This happens at the time of establishing the initial link (LCP), and may happen again
at any time afterwards. The verification is based on a shared secret (such as the client user’s
    password).
