Question 1

Refer to the exhibit. Which rule does the DHCP server use when there is an IP address conflict?

show_ip_dhcp_conflict.jpg

A. The address is removed from the pool until the conflict is resolved.
B. The address remains in the pool until the conflict is resolved.
C. Only the IP detected by Gratuitous ARP is removed from the pool.
D. Only the IP detected by Ping is removed from the pool.
E. The IP will be shown, even after the conflict is resolved.

Answer: A

Question 2

How dose a DHCP server dynamically assign IP address to host?

A. Addresses are allocated after a negotiation between the server and the host to determine the length of the agreement.
B. Addresses are assigned for a fixed period of time. At the end of period, a new quest for an address must be made, and another address is then assigned.
C. Addresses are leased to host. A host will usually keep the same address by periodically contacting the DHCP sever to renew the lease.
D. Addresses are permanently assigned so that the host uses the same address at all times.

Answer: C

Question 3

Which two tasks does the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol perform? (Choose two)

A. Set the IP gateway to be used by the network.
B. Perform host discovery used DHCPDISCOVER message.
C. Configure IP address parameters from DHCP server to a host.
D. Provide an easy management of layer 3 devices.
E. Monitor IP performance using the DHCP server.
F. Assign and renew IP address from the default pool.

Answer: C F

Question 4

Which statement is correct regarding the operation of DHCP?

A. A DHCP client uses a ping to detect address conflicts.
B. A DHCP server uses a gratuitous ARP to detect DHCP clients.
C. A DHCP client uses a gratuitous ARP to detect a DHCP server.
D. If an address conflict is detected, the address is removed from the pool and an administrator must resolve the conflict.
E. If an address conflict is detected, the address is removed from the pool for an amount of time configurable by the administrator.
F. If an address conflict is detected, the address is removed from the pool and will not be reused until the server is rebooted.

Answer: D

Explanation

An address conflict occurs when two hosts use the same IP address. During address assignment, DHCP checks for conflicts using ping and gratuitous ARP. If a conflict is detected, the address is removed from the pool. The address will not be assigned until the administrator resolves the conflict.

    @amila

    Hey Amila are you Sri Lankan :) ?

    DHCP’s main objective is to Assign IP address to hosts from the Given param.(Ip pool etc)
    and Renew / Assign to Hosts in LAN. Assigning the IP address of the Default Gateway is optional configuration. ” I think “

    September 25th, 2012

    Hi adminCan you pls update? The cerroct answer is D.CCNA Exploration 4.0, Book 4: Accessing the WAN, Page: 7.1.8.1 The show ip dhcp conflict command displays all address conflicts recorded by the DHCP server. The server uses the ping command to detect conflicts. The client uses Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) to detect clients. If an address conflict is detected, the address is removed from the pool and not assigned until an administrator resolves the conflict.

  16. Quophie
    September 25th, 2012

    @amila
    Answer A. is close to correctness but still wrong because the DHCP Server doesn’t assign IP gateway to the network, but assign IP gateway to the DHCP client.

  17. Jonus
    September 27th, 2012

    @Quophie
    I agree. A could imply that the hosts may configure the gateway themselves.

    What ‘default’ pool is used with DHCP? I thought you had to define a custom pool for DHCP to work. Can someone explain this??

    If a similar question comes up in the exam it will be articulated better than it has been here. Just be aware that B & E are definatley incorrect for now!

    Hello @9tut or anyone who wish to comment.
    Regarding question 4, testking has the very same question but it says the correct answer is E, not D.
    Which would be the right?.
    Thanks.

  23. Cesar
    October 19th, 2012

    I quote testking explanation:

    “By default, the CISCO IOS DHCP server attempts to verify address availability by performing a ping
    operation to the address before allocation. The default DHCP ping configuration will wait for 2 seconds
    for an ICMP echo reply. This default configuration results in the DHCP server servicing one address
    request every 2 seconds. The number of ping packets being sent and the ping timeout are configurable.
    Thus, to reduce the address allocation time, you can reduce either the timeout or the number of ping
    packets sent. Reducing the timeout or the ping packets being sent will improve the address allocation
    time, at the cost of less ability to detect duplicate addresses.”

    testking also provide a reference for this answer:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_2t/12_2t8/feature/guide/ftondhcp.html

    This is kind of confussing, I don’t know what answer to chose as the right one!!.

    b. If an address conflict is detected, the address is removed from the pool for an amount of time configurable by the administrator.

    yes, you can skip

  28. Xyz
    November 6th, 2012

    @atr
    The answer is a. it is explained on the link that 9tut provided.

    The explanation quoted by Cesar states that you can configure the amount of timeout or ping packets sent by the dhcp server before it allocates an address to reduce the possibility of an address conflict but it does not include the scenario after a dhcp conflict is detected which the link given by 9tut explains.

    Thanks.

    @KEvin 9tut is right if Cisco is meant. your choice ‘E’ is also right in terms of Microsoft technology. So dont get confused. You must choose ‘D’ according to Cisco requirement and not Microsoft.
    Thanks
