Here you will find answers to Basic Command Questions

Question 1

Refer to the exhibit. What can be determined from the output?

show_ip_arp.jpg

A. 192.168.1.2 is local to the router.
B. 192.168.3.1 is local to the router.
C. 192.168.1.2 will age out in less than 1 minute.
D. 192.168.3.1 has aged out and is marked for deletion.

Answer: B

Explanation

The “Age” field in the “show ip arp” command is the age in minutes of the cache entry. A hyphen (-) means the address is local so in this case 192.168.1.1 & 192.168.3.1 are local to this router -> B is correct.

Note: The “Age 0″ means that the address was cached less than 1 minute ago.

Question 2

Refer to the exhibit. What could be possible causes for the “Serial0/0 is down” interface status? (Choose two)

show_interfaces_serial.jpg

A. A Layer 1 problem exists.
B. The bandwidth is set too low.
C. A protocol mismatch exists.
D. An incorrect cable is being used.
E. There is an incorrect IP address on the Serial 0/0 interface.

Answer: A D

Explanation

The first part of the “Serial0/0 is down, line protocol is down” indicates a layer 1 problem while the second part indicates a layer 2 problem -> A is correct.

Some popular layer 1 problems are listed below:

+ device power off
+ device power unplugged
+ loose network cable connection
+ incorrect cable type
+ faulty network cable

Answer B “The bandwidth is set too low” will not make a layer 1 problem.
Answer C is a layer 2 problem.
Answer E is a layer 3 problem.

Question 3

Which line from the output of the show ip interface command indicates a layer 1 problem?

A. Serial0/1 is up, line protocol is down
B. Serial0/1 is down, line protocol is down
C. Serial0/1 is up, line protocol is up
D. Serial0/1 is administratively down, line protocol is down

Answer: B

Explanation

Same as question 2.

Question 4

Refer to the exhibit. What is the meaning of the output MTU 1500 bytes?

show_interfaces_ethernet.jpg

A. The maximum number of bytes that can traverse this interface per second is 1500.
B. The minimum segment size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.
C. The maximum segment size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.
D. The minimum packet size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.
E. The maximum packet size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.
F. The maximum frame size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.

Answer: E

Explanation

The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) defines the maximum Layer 3 packet (in bytes) that the layer can pass onwards.

Question 5

The network administrator normally establishes a Telnet session with the switch from host A. The administrator’s attempt to establish a connect via Telnet to the switch from host B fails, but pings from host B to other two hosts are successful. What is the issue for this problem?

show_ip_int_brief.jpg

A. Host B and the switch need to be in the same subnet.
B. The switch needs an appropriate default gateway assigned.
C. The switch interface connected to the router is down.
D. Host B need to be assigned an IP address in vlan 1.

Answer: B

Explanation

Host A (172.19.1.1) and the management IP address of the Switch (172.19.1.250) are in the same subnet so telnet from host A to the switch can be successful even if a default gateway is not set on host A.

Although the switch has an IP address in Interface Vlan1 but it does not have a default gateway command pointing to the ip address on interface 172.19.1.254 -> B is correct.

Question 6

Which command displays CPU utilization?

A. show protocols
B. show process
C. show system
D. show version

Answer: B

Explanation

The “show process” (in fact, the full command is “show processes”) command gives us lots of information about each process but in fact it is not easy to read. Below shows the output of this command (some next pages are omitted)

show_process.jpg

A more friendly way to check the CPU utilization is the command “show processes cpu history”, in which the total CPU usage on the router over a period of time: one minute, one hour, and 72 hours are clearly shown:

show processes cpu history.jpg

+ The Y-axis of the graph is the CPU utilization.
+ The X-axis of the graph is the increment within the period displayed in the graph

For example, from the last graph (last 72 hours) we learn that the highest CPU utilization within 72 hours is 37% about six hours ago.

Question 7

Refer to the exhibit. You are connected to the router as user Mike. Which command allows you to see output from the OSPF debug command?

show_users.jpg

A. terminal monitor
B. show debugging
C. show sessions
D. show ip ospf interface

Answer: A

Explanation

By default, Cisco IOS does not send log messages to a terminal session over IP like Telnet, SSH but console connections do have logging feature enabled by default. To display debug command output and system error messages for Telnet or SSH session, use the “terminal monitor” command in privileged mode.

    Question 4 has wrong answer.
“show interfaces ethernet 0″ command shows data-link layer information (in the partial output), so the MTU size is refferd to as maximum frame size, not packet size.

    Question 5.
“so host B needs a default gateway to telnet to the switch”. But in question said: ” pings from host B to other two hosts are successful”. So host B already have deafult gateway ( to switch`s managment subnet, as to host A too)

Q5: Host B can ping other hosts that means HostB already has a default gateway set and normaly hostB can ping also Vlan1 IP so telnet it unless there is an ACL to prevent hostB in the switch.
I thing all the answers were not presented well

@ablo Q5: I believe that what 9tut meant is that Host A is already in the default VLAN1 and hence, no routing is necessary. So even if the default VLAN1 has no default-gateway configured, Host A will still be able to communicate.

Now, since Host B is on a different VLAN other than the default VLAN1, telneting to it will require routing. Host B can communicate with other hosts which implies that it has a default gateway configured. But since it cannot telnet to VLAN1, the only possible explanation is that VLAN1 does not have a defautl-gateway configured.

In other words, it is not Host B that needs a default gateway configured but rather, the switch’s default VLAN1.

Correct answer: B. The switch needs an appropriate default gateway assigned.

I hope I was able to clarify.

People you don’t need the latest dumps — you need to practice the material — you need speed — practice the questions — change them a little — looks things up on internet — understand everything — and get some speed at it — practice packet tracers — so that you are fast at making decisions and sending commands

    A-show interfaces
    B-show ip interfaces
    C-show controllers
    D-show protocols

    August 3rd, 2012

    @mido…B,C,D
“show interfaces” is used to see the IP addresses and layer 2 information configured on theinterfaces.
“show controllers” is used to see the layer 1 statistics. It tells about the V.35 cables whether theyare physically attached or not.
“show ip interfaces” is used to see the IP addresses configured on the interfaces

i think A,B,C is the correct answer

    A. sh interface

    R3#sh int fa0/0
FastEthernet0/0 is up, line protocol is up (connected)
Hardware is Lance, address is 0010.1114.1901 (bia 0010.1114.1901)
    Internet address is 192.168.77.34/30

    B. sh ip int

    R3#sh ip int fa0/0
FastEthernet0/0 is up, line protocol is up (connected)
    Internet address is 192.168.77.34/30
    Broadcast address is 255.255.255.255

    C. sh controllers s0/0/0

    R1#sh controllers s0/0
    Interface Serial0/0
    Hardware is PowerQUICC MPC860
    DCE V.35, clock rate 500000
idb at 0x81081AC4, driver data structure at 0x81084AC0

    sh ip protocols

    - used to determine/verify the routing protocol used rip, eigrp or ospf. basically used for layer 3

please correct me if i’m wrong. tnx

which of the following commands will display current ip addressing and the layer 1 and layer 2 status of this interfaces (choose three)

    A-show interfaces
    B-show ip interfaces
    C-show controllers
    D-show protocols
    E-show startup-config
    F-show version

    i think the right answers is A, B, D
Show controller does not shows the status of current ip address and layer2 status, it just shows layer 1 status.

    @mido

    I think B,C,D is correct.

    sh controllers

    974-0-1-RTR01#sh controllers
    Interface GigabitEthernet0/0 (idb 0x6605C518)
Hardware is BCM1125 Internal MAC (Revision )
    network link is up
Config is Auto Speed, Auto Duplex
    Selected media-type is RJ45

    sh protocols

    974-0-1-RTR01#sh protocols
    Global values:
    Internet Protocol routing is enabled
GigabitEthernet0/0 is up, line protocol is up

question is about Layer 1 and layer 2 status, show controllers doesnt give any layer 2 status, only layer 1. Correct me if i’m wrong.

Q5. I think it seems to be little tricky question that misguides when u look @ at it
It’s actually asking for 2 information viz.,
    i. details of current ip addressing on the interfaces
ii. status of (all) interfaces w.r.t layer 1 & 2

    Answer :
    B. show ip interfaces –> Gives ip addressing info like status of ICMP, security, proxy,…
    C. sh controllers – - > Shows Layer 1 info like cable, clock rate,…
    D. show protocols — > Show the status of the interfaces whether it is up or down w.r.t to the routing …
    ====
A –> just shows the basic info of the interface

    @Q5

Hi all! It took me quite a while to understand this as I am a Slow Learner. Just to share what I have learnt by simulating this scenario in packet tracer and understanding it.

First of all, the address on PC 3 is 172.19.33.13/24.

Things to note: All the subinterfaces are configured on the router as per the diagram.
and all the hosts are able to ping each other.

    2) Tried to telnet from Host A and it is successful. Tried to Telnet from other hosts and not successful. Why is this so?

First of all, we have given the default gateway on each PC to the subinterface of the router configured accordingly.

So when i type telnet 172.19.1.250, from PC2, the request goes to Router and it correctly route to the switch but there is no default gateway on the switch so the switch do not know how to route the packet to PC2 as they are under different Vlans.

    Hope it helps.

  46. 24k
    November 5th, 2012

consider the 3 vlans where each pc belongs 1, 32, 33. The 3 hosts are not of the same network that is why they needed a default gateway. By dividing them into different vlan’s you somewhat created created different networks.

    Answer is A, B , D.
The question is about a command that shows BOTH. Read carefully!
…current ip addressing AND the layer 1 and layer 2 status…

sh controllers does not show an IP address!

Only those commands show IP address AND interface up/down (layer1) and link up/down (layer2)

    A-show interfaces
    B-show ip interfaces
    D-show protocols
