Here you will find answers to Basic Command Questions

Question 1

Refer to the exhibit. What can be determined from the output?

show_ip_arp.jpg

A. 192.168.1.2 is local to the router.
B. 192.168.3.1 is local to the router.
C. 192.168.1.2 will age out in less than 1 minute.
D. 192.168.3.1 has aged out and is marked for deletion.

Answer: B

Explanation

The “Age” field in the “show ip arp” command is the age in minutes of the cache entry. A hyphen (-) means the address is local so in this case 192.168.1.1 & 192.168.3.1 are local to this router -> B is correct.

Note: The “Age 0″ means that the address was cached less than 1 minute ago.

Question 2

Refer to the exhibit. What could be possible causes for the “Serial0/0 is down” interface status? (Choose two)

show_interfaces_serial.jpg

A. A Layer 1 problem exists.
B. The bandwidth is set too low.
C. A protocol mismatch exists.
D. An incorrect cable is being used.
E. There is an incorrect IP address on the Serial 0/0 interface.

Answer: A D

Explanation

The first part of the “Serial0/0 is down, line protocol is down” indicates a layer 1 problem while the second part indicates a layer 2 problem -> A is correct.

Some popular layer 1 problems are listed below:

+ device power off
+ device power unplugged
+ loose network cable connection
+ incorrect cable type
+ faulty network cable

Answer B “The bandwidth is set too low” will not make a layer 1 problem.
Answer C is a layer 2 problem.
Answer E is a layer 3 problem.

Question 3

Which line from the output of the show ip interface command indicates a layer 1 problem?

A. Serial0/1 is up, line protocol is down
B. Serial0/1 is down, line protocol is down
C. Serial0/1 is up, line protocol is up
D. Serial0/1 is administratively down, line protocol is down

Answer: B

Explanation

Same as question 2.

Question 4

Refer to the exhibit. What is the meaning of the output MTU 1500 bytes?

show_interfaces_ethernet.jpg

A. The maximum number of bytes that can traverse this interface per second is 1500.
B. The minimum segment size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.
C. The maximum segment size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.
D. The minimum packet size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.
E. The maximum packet size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.
F. The maximum frame size that can traverse this interface is 1500 bytes.

Answer: E

Explanation

The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) defines the maximum Layer 3 packet (in bytes) that the layer can pass onwards.

Question 5

The network administrator normally establishes a Telnet session with the switch from host A. The administrator’s attempt to establish a connect via Telnet to the switch from host B fails, but pings from host B to other two hosts are successful. What is the issue for this problem?

show_ip_int_brief.jpg

A. Host B and the switch need to be in the same subnet.
B. The switch needs an appropriate default gateway assigned.
C. The switch interface connected to the router is down.
D. Host B need to be assigned an IP address in vlan 1.

Answer: B

Explanation

Host A (172.19.1.1) and the management IP address of the Switch (172.19.1.250) are in the same subnet so telnet from host A to the switch can be successful even if a default gateway is not set on host A.

Although the switch has an IP address in Interface Vlan1 but it does not have a default gateway command pointing to the ip address on interface 172.19.1.254 -> B is correct.

Question 6

Which command displays CPU utilization?

A. show protocols
B. show process
C. show system
D. show version

Answer: B

Explanation

The “show process” (in fact, the full command is “show processes”) command gives us lots of information about each process but in fact it is not easy to read. Below shows the output of this command (some next pages are omitted)

show_process.jpg

A more friendly way to check the CPU utilization is the command “show processes cpu history”, in which the total CPU usage on the router over a period of time: one minute, one hour, and 72 hours are clearly shown:

show processes cpu history.jpg

+ The Y-axis of the graph is the CPU utilization.
+ The X-axis of the graph is the increment within the period displayed in the graph

For example, from the last graph (last 72 hours) we learn that the highest CPU utilization within 72 hours is 37% about six hours ago.

Question 7

Refer to the exhibit. You are connected to the router as user Mike. Which command allows you to see output from the OSPF debug command?

show_users.jpg

A. terminal monitor
B. show debugging
C. show sessions
D. show ip ospf interface

Answer: A

Explanation

By default, Cisco IOS does not send log messages to a terminal session over IP like Telnet, SSH but console connections do have logging feature enabled by default. To display debug command output and system error messages for Telnet or SSH session, use the “terminal monitor” command in privileged mode.

    Hi,

How can B be the correct answer for question 5 and explanation also doesn’t make sense. A sound like more correct than C. B says” The switch needs an appropriate default gateway assigned” and in explanation you are saying that host should be assigned default gateway which makes sense but still how does that make B as a correct answer. If host B tries to telnet to switch and has default gateway as router, the packet would reach router and router knows the switch so it will forward the packet to that switch and telnet should work. But we don’t have that option to select and B doesn’t make sense. Could you please elaborate on it more.

  10. 9tut
    November 30th, 2012

@Kanwal: Answer A is not correct because the switch itself does not require an IP address and it does not belong to any subnet so “Host B and the switch need to be in the same subnet” can’t be correct.

Answer C is not correct because “pings from host B to other two hosts are successful”. That means the trunk link between the router and switch must be up and interVLAN routing is working correctly.

    @ Daniels
I took the CCNA exam last week and failed. Retaking the test tomorrow. You cannot use ? It may however work on something if you try it for every command but for the most part it does not. Memorize your commands. sh ip int brief, sh ip route, sh cdp neighbors, sh cdp neighbors detail, sh frame-relay map, sh frame-relay lmi, sh frame-relay pvc, sh run, sh vtp status, sh mac address-table, sh vlan, sh spanning-tree and maybe one of two others. Good Luck!

Whether can we use tab key to fill the full cmds??
Also can we use shortcut cmds in exam like we use in gns3 or packet tracer??
eg:sh run, sh ip int br, sh ip rout…
    thanks.

    @juka1
I failed yesterday for the 2nd time. 643 1st time and 788 2nd time. I did very well on the multiple choice and drag and drop. My problem was the Labs. There is very little leeway and I only got 20% correct on the ACL lab. I went in to “ALL” the hosts and copied the Finance Web Server address and i was able to access it successfully even after adding the access-list lines. Why? because I forgot to add it to the interface!! and Why? because they gave me the Sim on the 49th question with only 8 minutes to spare. Just not enough time for me as I panicked and of course had the dredded Frame- Relay DLCI question for the 50th. Should pass on my 3 times a charm try.

i am not clear with Question 5..we have to set default gateway for switch or host..? switch mean for 3 vlan how set default gateway witch ip will DG for switch..?

  22. ZZ
    December 24th, 2012

Hi Dhina, the switch shall be assigned a default gateway from the management vlan (i.e Vlan 1). This has to be set on the switch so that the switch can be accessed remotely, from other VLANs and from other networks for that matter. However, this does not affect at all the switches role in frame forwarding; only for remote access porpose to the switch.

    Hi.
I think qwestion 5 is not so corectly. If HOst B can ping to host A and C, it means that host B has default gatewey, so B can telnet to switch (179.19.1.250).
Answer B is the best answer, but this qwestion is bad write qwestion.
    Wy?

  31. amp
    January 7th, 2013

IMHO for question 5, B is the correct answer.

    It says :
    B. The switch needs an appropriate default gateway assigned.

Other hosts is reachable from B, except the switch. I consider the switch acts as a host. Therefore this could means other hosts default gateway is configured correctly except the switch.

  32. amp
    January 7th, 2013

For question 5, however this Explanation part would confuse us :) :

“But host B (172.19.32.2) and the management IP address of the Switch (172.19.1.250) are not in the same subnet so host B needs a default gateway to telnet to the switch. The default gateway on host B should be 172.19.32.254.”

Because Host B already able to reach Host A and C, this could means default gateway is configured correctly in Host B.

    Let me know your thoughts.

@amp:Q5: Your analysis is correct. The question should not have had “…pings from host B to other two hosts are successful.”. :)

  37. Anonymous
    January 24th, 2013

Q 5 is definetely confusing, since all 4 answers are wrong and the explanation isn’t any better. Pls fix this

  38. ANNY
    January 29th, 2013

Q5… the switch needs a default gateway pointing to 172.19.1.254…the description in the answers is badly written.

    1. The default gateways are on the router
    2. The switch has an ip address in vlan1…Int vlan 1….but does not have a default gateway command configured pointing to the ip address on router 172.19.1.254
    3. Therefore client A can talk to the switch because they are on the same subnet and you do not need a default gateway configured to communicate on same subnet, Clients B and C can not Telnet to the switch.

    4. Ans B is correct.

    February 14th, 2013

The question is 5 is confused, however the vlan 1 is diferent network than the vlan from host B.

If you think host b can reach host a because host B has a default gateway.

Switch only have layer 3 conectivity for vlan 1 because it is its own network. The switch does not how to reach the vlan 32. The switch needs to point the router to reach that network because the router can send traffic accross every single vlan.

The switch is not a layer 3 device ¨It needs to forward the traffic to the router¨

    I hope that helps.

In the picture there is not ¨show ip route¨

So We can not say that the switch does not have a default gateway but it would be the only answer.

this is basic routing. But needs to be anylized very well. That is why only practicing we can understand that.
